ASTR445: Intro to General Relativity
Credit Hours: 4 Instructor: Eanna Flanagan Typically offered: Fall Crosslisted with: PHY 445 Homepage: http://www.astro.cornell.edu/%7Eflanagan/ph445/index.html
General relativity is a fundamental cornerstone of physics that underlies several of the most exciting areas of current research. These areas include theoretical high energy physics and the search for a quantum theory of gravity, relativistic astrophysics, and in particular cosmology, where there have been several ground breaking observations over the last few years. This course is a one semester introduction to general relativity which teaches physics concepts and phenomenology while keeping mathematical formalism to a minimum. It uses a textbook "Gravity: An Introduction to Einstein's General Relativity" by James Hartle. The course is offered as an alternative to the more comprehensive, two semester graduate sequence PHYS 553/554.
